Introduction

Public administrators act as the link between policymakers and the public. The term Stakeholders refers to organizations or people who can impact the public administrators’ success based on their attitudes and actions. For public administrators to work effectively, they should consider the concerns and needs of the public for them to be successful in their service delivery. Effective communication serves as a channel that is used in ensuring that proper information is passed to the public. Good communication to the stakeholders enables the public administration to achieve support that will boost its performance and makes it possible for it to achieve its goals. Some of these advantages include better understanding, influence creation, increased sources of power and strong relationships.

Better Understanding

Efficient communication enables stakeholders to understand what the goals of public administrators are. Stakeholders like citizens are also able to have an idea on how supporting the existing administration will lead to the benefit of the community in which it is operating. One is then able to secure funding from shareholders and investors who are interested and committed to contributing to the success of the nation. Plans made by these administrators that may impact the local community in any way should be communicated way ahead of time to stakeholders like the government and policymakers and regulators so that support can be garnered and approval given.

Creating Influence

Positive influence is attained as a result of effective communication. Support is received from different agencies, organizations and people like special interest groups or the media who in turn, influence several other stakeholders. This way, the public administrators get the necessary support system that will help them achieve their goals. Holding interviews and press release conferences with journalists will serve as limelight for this leadership and provide a good platform for explaining one’s point of view in certain matters that are crucial to society. It is then that stakeholder interests are met.

Influencing Sources of Power

A communication program should involve meeting the interests of the stakeholders with the highest influence on the success of the administration. Examples of such stakeholders include policy makers and government agencies which often are responsible for the formulation of policies and issuing of permits that allow for any operations to proceed. Public administrators should, therefore, focus on making good their communications with such stakeholders to gain their support and in so doing increasing the ability to succeed in their agendas for the public.

Stronger Relationships

A good understanding with stakeholders as a result of efficient communications leads to the securing of long-lasting relationships that are key to any leadership. With these strong relationships comes a wide range of benefits. Regarding development projects, for example, good communication helps one to have a stronger position that will lead to the securing of enough funds. Communicating well with stakeholders also enables the administration to have a stronger support system that will ensure that any set goals are achieved.
