When I joined the teaching profession, my primary objective was to help shape the lives of children at a young age because that is when one can make a long-lasting impact on somebody’s entire life. In my line of duty, I have come across children with disability, and I have seen first-hand how they struggle to keep up with their classmates. I want to pursue a program to get certification to work with these children with special needs so that I can help them fit in with the others, help them achieve their short-term and long-term goals. Going back to school after ten years of teaching will be a new experience for me. I will have to work harder than my mates who have been in class in recent years so that I can be on their level. I have set my academic goals. The first one is to achieve my special education degree, as all states require a special education teacher to have a license and at least a degree in education and special education. This is the first step towards a career in special education. My second academic goal is to obtain state certification. All special education teachers are expected by all states to be licensed to teach children with special needs in a public school. This license is going to be issued only after successful completion of the student teaching program, which is offered as part of the special education degree coursework. My last academic goal will be specialization. Special education teachers are authorized to teach in six different disciplines, and I would like to specialize in teaching children with autism because I can connect with children with autism due to relations with people with autism in my personal life. Specialization will also make me more competitive in my career choice and be more rewarding financially. My career goals include meeting the needs of each student at a time. Children with special needs should have an individualized education plan-IEP. The teacher writes and implements the IEP. To meet the individual needs of each special needs pupil, the teacher must modify the class work for each pupil. If working with a pupil in a regular classroom, the special needs teacher informs the regular teacher on how to accommodate the special need student. My second career goal is to create good relations with my pupils. A good relationship between a special needs student and teacher is beneficial to the student, as he will feel more comfortable when asking for help from the teacher. The teacher also finds it easier to encourage the students to do their best. An excellent special needs teacher should have a clear track of her student’s progress. My third career goal is keeping good records of accomplishment for my students. To maintain a good and consistent record of achievement, I plan to assess the pupils after every period. My last career objective is to keep appropriate paperwork that is well updated and organized. This paperwork will include eligibility paperwork, re-evaluation paperwork, progress notes, IEPs, student work portfolios and copies of the parents’ communication. The program I plan on pursuing is going to help me understand how to tend the needs of children with autism and how to relate to them. The program is also going to help me know what is required of me as a Special education teacher. I believe I am an ideal candidate for the program because I have had an interest in helping people with autism and starting with the children in schools I can make a difference in the lives of generations to come.
