When conducting a study on the role of a specialist nurse in community care, the most appropriate method is the use of case studies. Case studies are considered the best because, in the healthcare setting, it has a range of uses. For instance, case studies will focus on the outcomes of the clinical nurse specialist because they provide a good source of ideas about behavior. It also provides an excellent opportunity for innovation, as well as a better approach to studying the phenomena under investigation (Hancock, 2002). However, the drawbacks of using the method are that it will be hard to draw in the definite cause-effect solutions and to make a generalization from a single case. As such, there is a high likelihood of biases in data collection and interpretation.

However, to address the above-identified challenges, focus groups may be used to study the geographical spread of your potential participants because a researcher can easily select the members within a given group carefully to get effective responses. The focus group approach is the best way to gather information from participants through employing inclusion criteria for selecting participants (Hancock, 2002). The participant's inclusion criteria should be established upfront based on the purpose of the study. The best approach is the use of nomination, where key individuals are nominating people who are believed to make good participants. The nominated individuals will be familiar with the phenomenon under investigation and will be known for their ability to respectfully share their views by volunteering. In essence, there are advantages of using the focus groups because they can be included to participate in a study through the use of one or some ways, such as volunteering
