How Lockdown and Quarantine Relates to Cognitive Psychology

The issue of quarantine and lockdown due to Covid-19 relates to cognitive psychology in various ways, such as helping people to be creative on developing new ways of living with the coronavirus pandemic. For instance, the lockdown has led to innovative ways on how people can engage in some work despite the lockdown and advice by health officials to work from home. Individuals who have lost their jobs due to lockdown have become creative and innovative on how to make a living after losing their jobs. For example, individuals who used to work in brick and mortar stores such as supermarkets have become creative by using the online platform to conduct their businesses. People are using online services such as social media platforms to sell their products and services.

In addition, lockdown relates to cognitive psychology on how people perceive issues. Lockdown has made people change their perceptions on many issues such as consumption of alcohol. Due to lockdown, social gatherings have been banned, and therefore individuals have changed their perceptions that they can stay without alcohol. In addition, the lockdown has made people appreciate the fact that it is not a must for social events such as weddings to have many people. During quarantine and lockdown, individuals have learned that they can hold social events virtually.

Also, lockdown and quarantine relate to cognitive psychology through the development of new skills among individuals. For instance, barbershops were closed down to help curb the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Consequently, individuals have learned new skills on how to trim their hair, that of their family members and close friends, something. A significant number of the population used to rely on restaurants and hotels for their meals. However, as a result of the lockdown, the pandemic has taught them to adopt new skills in cooking since the restaurants are not available to them. The majority of the people are able to learn new cooking skills from online platforms such as YouTube and social media platforms.

Quarantine and lockdown have led to cognitive psychology aspects of problem-solving. For example, individuals have been in a position to develop applications that can be used to hold online meetings. For instance, in many organizations, employees have continued to work from home by using online platforms such as Google Meet and Zoom. In addition, lockdown and quarantine have led to problem-solving in the health care sector. For instance, people have learned that it is not a must for them to visit a physical health care facility. They are able to seek medical attention through online platforms where doctors are able to provide quality care to their patients. For example, patients can reach their doctors using platforms such as Skype and get advice on medication prescription.

Cognitive Psychology Concept

Cognitive psychology is characterized by the belief that psychological distress is largely as a result of disturbance in the perception and thinking capabilities of an individual—a focus on changing cognition in order to produce desired changes in behavior and emotions. Therefore, through cognitive psychology, individuals are able to change their mentality on a particular issue. For instance, lockdown and quarantine have made many people change their thinking about how they conduct their obligations and behavior (Putnam et al., 2016). Also, the period of lockdown has enabled people to appreciate the new changes introduced as a result of quarantine. For example, individuals are able to live with the aspect that they can no longer handshake as well as maintain a close social distance in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

The main cognitive psychology skills include pattern recognition, response inhibition, speed information processing, sustained attention, and category formation. In addition, cognitive psychology helps to explain why people behave in a particular way and help to embrace their behaviors.

New information I learned About Cognitive Psychology

I have learned new information regarding cognitive psychology, especially on why it is important for students to study. It is essential for people to study cognitive psychology because it helps them to understand the behaviours of others as well as learn how to embrace the divergent views by other individuals. Cognitive psychologists conduct psychological experiments that include an individual's participants with the objective of obtaining information to help understand the human mind and processes. In addition, cognitive psychology improves the capability of an individual to remember.

Moreover, cognitive psychology leads to the development of people skills, which helps interactions with family members, friends, and colleagues at work. Besides, cognitive psychology enables people to show empathy for others and also leads to better romantic relationships. For instance, during the lockdown and quarantine, since most people have been working from home, they have had enough time to build on their romantic relationships. In addition, parents who have always been separated from their children because of their jobs have been able to get a good time and improve their parenting and relationship with children (Reed, 2019). Cognitive psychology enables individuals to understand the thinking and perspective of others, therefore making it possible for people to walk in the same direction.

In addition, cognitive psychology enables people to make informed and appropriate decisions. For instance, since an individual is able to understand and embrace the views of another, they end up making selfless decisions. Leaders in organizations should study and have the aspect of cognitive psychology because it is instrumental in making appropriate decisions, which translates to better outcomes among employees and achievement of organizational goals (Putnam et al., 2016). Besides, cognitive psychology leads to better communication skills and conceptual reasoning among people. Students who study cognitive psycchology learn how to think, reason, and question, therefore strengthening their analytical and critical thinking skills.

Conclusion

Cognitive psychology involves elements such as critical thinking, perception, problem-solving, memory, and judgment. The aspects of cognitive psychology have been impactful during quarantine and lockdown because people have utilized its elements such as problem-solving to cope with challenges such as loss of jobs. For instance, people have been creative and adopted the use of online platforms to conduct their businesses as opposed to brick and mortar. Cognitive psychology enables people to understand the thinking of others and embrace their divergent opinions about an issue. Therefore, cognitive psychology has been instrumental during the lockdown and quarantine times due to the myriad of benefits it provides, such as better innovative skills among individuals. Also, during lock down and quarantine, individuals have become creative and innovative on how to do business for instance through social media platforms.
