As a member of modern society, I find considerations about race as inevitable as the rising and setting of the sun. Differences based on race have become such a fixture of daily life that am sure am not the only one who has never intentionally taken the time and effort to really dissect and understand its meaning either out of curiosity or to internalize its implications. Thus, in hindsight, it seems inevitable that the above-titled series documentary based on the concept of race would inspire such deep provocation of consciousness and critical thought.

In this episode, there are several scientists providing education designed to dispel the myth that people across the world can be definitively classified and therefore, racially profiled. Scientists have made several discoveries that definitively show why it is that humans cannot be classified based on race and the lack of a single trait, characteristic, or gene that can provide justification for the existence of racial discrimination (California Newsreel, 2014). This episode’s impact on me stems from the manner proves that race is not a valid biological concept but a myth. Put succinctly, just as the students at the DNA workshop were enlightened, this documentary has deepened my understanding of the link between race and social conditions.

While differences in social conditions that are racially motivated endure, thanks to the documentary, I have arrived at a new level of understanding of this seemingly polarizing concept. Biologically, it has been proven impossible to bundle people solely based on the notion of race. Genetically, it is evident that we are a similar and the superficial differences that endure are based on ancestry. Nevertheless, race remains a highly contentious and divisive concept, both historically and currently. Clearly, this documentary tackles comprehensively the numerous complexities associated with this enduring concept.
