After reading the excerpt of “what is art” and watching the Allegory of the Cave, there is wide similarity, especially in terms of illusions and dialogues. In Plato’s Allegory of the cave, numerous symbols include the following. On top of that, a cave may be explained to be a common area where various concepts, ideas, and thoughts are generally accepted. Nevertheless, there are on specific ideas and thoughts from the experience of a cave that are accepted as facts. There are shadows on the walls depicts ideas that are not vivid but are everything that is known (Allegory of the Cave, 2019). Prisoners define the culture or the communities of the cave, which are centralized in it and have no external experiences. The person who escapes the cave is one who decides to leave the culture or community of the people who are always searching for the truth. Outside the cave, there are a lot of realities which are far from the shadows on the walls. Outside the cave, there is the daylight, which is a depiction of the truth. In the excerpt, there is a bed which the author tries to look from a carpenter’s point of view, the painter and the maker are the same (What is Art, 2019). The elements in the two cases have been made to appear from various point of view; directly or circuitously. However, in reality, the elements are the same things.
From the final statement made by Socrates, it is clear that Plato was not impressed by the arts. He always felt that art was not real and pure. He tends to illustrate that art is an imitation of what already exists in reality. I tend to disagree with him even if I understand his point of view. This is because art narrates or conveys a specific message to a specific audience. Music and paintings are some of the pieces of art that would show why Platos hated art. He believes that the latter should be controlled because they can make people wade away from the reality of the world. Art shapes the character of people and can sometimes give them fake illusions about the real world, for example, on matters of love, marriage, and gender equality.
