For higher learning, there is need to develop contextualized assessment practices. Contextualized assessment practices enable students to link whatever learnt in class to real-world situations. This is was what was actually provided in the assessment and special education course. Assessment and special education are necessary in enabling leadership development, embedded to the context of assessment components. The assignment was about the authentic assessment conducted to investigate the student’s learning ability. To complete the assessment task, I worked together with a small group of 9 th grade international students. My duty was to help these students learn English as their second language. The key components of this assessment program enhanced my learning as well teaching skills, as I am scheduled to be a teacher.

One of the major tasks of authentic assessment is to apply knowledge and skills learnt both inside and outside the classroom in real-world situations. The assessment presents the problem and we had to utilize the knowledge and skills acquired to solve the problem. This practice allows the connection between the student and the material, and hence, the student is fully engaged. Sure, authentic assessment is very essential to student learning in fitting into the competitive job market, once they graduate from college. Several studies have noted that current workplaces consider workers who have critical thinking and problem-solving skills. My core objective during the assessment project was to inspire students to think critically and apply learning concepts of reform to their own experiences. In order to enable effective learning, it is important to restore some important cultures as perceived by students so as to make the learning process enjoyable and accommodative. During the exercise, students were asked to determine their beliefs and this was well managed in a class discussion. Understanding students’ views helped to tell who had actually learnt. Authentic assessment is a multi-faceted project, which enables teaching as well as learning to occur concurrently. These are some of the core skill that is required from me.

The assessment project was constructed around specific and attainable learning objectives. The main learning objective for the student is to ease the transition of students into a new culture and aid their interaction with the system and people they encounter on a day-to-day basis. Some of the other learning objectives set for the class include learning how to read and to acquire other skills as well. For example, learning to read could enhance an individual’s writing skills. The other learning objective for the class is to develop critical thinking skills by learning and comprehending the use of English as a second language. The final learning objective for the class was to enhance the student’s learning process and help them fit into the other classes effectively.

To evaluate the effectiveness of the assessment, a number of milestones were identified to grade students’ learning. For instance, class debates were conducted and through this, students highlighted real-world examples applying to their lives. Debating enables learning to be meaningful by incorporating much context in the learning process. Engaging in real-life situations opens student’s eyes and speaks volumes about effective learning. Throughout the process, I was involved in constructing milestone plan, lesson planning as well as debate rubrics, which were used to identify students who had learnt something and those who were still struggling. This develops into my future skills as I will be handling the real problems as at now.

Overly, the experiences gained from the assessment will positively influence my future teaching in many ways. This was a great opportunity to make learning real for me and for the students and provided me with the ownership of my work. Thus, authentic assessment is worth including in the learning process for students. Authentic assessment enables teachers to make sure they use a fair system in helping students to learn better.
