The Human Growth and Development course helped me to overcome development challenges and reach my full potential. I was unsure of my ability to grasp the concepts at first. However, I became used to multiple theories and terminologies used in the lessons of this course. During the class lessons, I learned the stages of human development and growth of a child from infancy to adulthood and aging. Although I knew from my experience that human growth is a process with different stages, I lacked the theoretical knowledge to support my beliefs about growth. The course dwelt deeply on the Genetic influences on development, which made me understand the genetic abnormalities in human development and growth. I enjoyed the introductory course in development psychology perceptual development which are critical in understanding human development. It was interesting to learn how common-sense changes with age. The course was broad and detailed with theories and research related to cognitive, physical and social development. I learned the data collection method for human development such as observation techniques, experimental techniques, and survey.
Through this course, I understood the basic learning skills such as critical thinking, creative thinking, collaboration, and communication. I noticed that my preferred learning type of this course was reading materials. The class sessions were interesting because the instructors made them inclusive to help us participate fully. I used my study skills to read and understand the concepts and terminologies in this course. The quizzes and exams helped to apply the theories learned in this course and I shared my views on group sessions. I also used my analyzing skills to examine each theory discussed in this course and noted how they fit together to explain human development. I learned the terminology, basic facts, and the generally accepted principles of development.

I learned cognitive, genetic theories, intelligence theories. Besides the theories studied in the classroom, I conducted research to find out more about human development and growth. In general, I became acquainted with Fred’s Psychanalytic theory, Erikson’s Theory of Psychosocial Development, Piaget’s theory of Stages of cognitive development and Albert Bandura’s social learning theory. In my view, these theories are not limited to physicians, nurses, nutritionists, and counselors. The theories cut across different disciplines and can help teachers, and parents too. I participated in the class discussion on the theoretical approach to human development and growth. However, the most interesting part of the course was the recurrent development issues and how I applied my knowledge to the problem and situations we discussed during the course. The knowledge and theories discussed in class make sense to me because they were consistent with my experience with my siblings. The information in this course will also help me advance my career at each level. Learning involves cognitive, sociocultural, psychodynamic and biological perspectives. I have a better understanding of all these theoretical perspectives, which will help me improve my learning skills.
The lessons in this class have changed my perspective on parenting and relationships. I would like to show my future growing child the reasons for everything because I firmly believe in self-education. Human body develops continually and influences a child’s learning capacities. The lessons gave me the confidence to teach a child literacy skills and readability without depending entirely on a kindergarten teacher. Learning is a continuous process and does not start and end in school. Communication, listening and seeking are all important aspects of starting and maintaining relationships. Sensory, cognitive, language and social stages of developments are characterized by different communication changes. I learned how to communicate with adults, adolescent infants, which important in maintaining relationships. Mothers need to understand human development psychology to help their children with learning and socialization. The lessons also included stimulus associated with certain behavioral conditions and vicarious reinforcement which are important the behavior of friends and relatives.
The course also brought up questions on development that I feel I need to research. The major question is whether conventional education leads to personal development. My former education is varied because I received teachings from parents, teachers, and motivators. During this course, I was struck by the way teachers expected all students to believe and assume statements and theories without tangible explanation or proof. However, I conducted more research and dwelt deeply on the theoretical approaches to understand them better.
In general, this class has been instrumental in shaping my view of relationships, human development growth, and parenting. It helped me to know myself better and taught me skills that will help me in my future courses. I gained knowledge of human behavior and can interact with fellow students during in discussions and group work. It is also important in my work-related goals. I intend to overcome fear and timidity. I will use the knowledge I have acquired on ecological systems theory to know how to interact with those who create systems that affect my life.
