Religion, in my opinion, is more likely to influence economic because of religious beliefs, as well as practices, have a certain influence in how people spend their money, thus an impact on economics. For instance, there are religions that encourage minimalist living; hence such believers do not inject a lot of money into the economy. For example, the Amish people, due to their faith, believe in simple living. Karl max, when he said that religion was an opiate to oppressed people, meant that it is a way in which believers escape from the reality of a painful world that subjects people to daily struggles. However, it also leaves believers at the mercy of those who control religion, making believers weak and vulnerable. For example, people pray when they are in pain for healing, people go to church to be told of the goodness of God, and people offer tithes to the churches as they believe it is right and just. Also, people also engage in charity in hopes that they too will be blessed in return and finally people attend church services to receive word that is both soothing and healing to escape the reality of a harsh life.
I do not agree that for there to be equality, societies must rid themselves of religion because religion calls for believers to treat one another as equals just as God does. However, riding the society of classism and other evils such as corruption and crime would achieve equality for the people. The spirit of capitalism refers to an instance in which individuals see profit as an end in itself, which makes the pursuit of profit virtuous. The Protestant ethic refers to the value attached to thrift, hard work as well as efficiency as far as a person’s worldly calling is concerned. Interreligious conflict refers to differences that arise between different religion such as Islam and Christianity. Intra religious conflict refers to the differences that arise between people of the same religion but off different denominations such as conflicts between Roman Catholics and Protestants. Theodicies of disprivilege refer to the promise that in the event of earthly poverty, one may be granted salvation as a reward.
