Alternatives to structured interviews include:

Projective Methods: The subject is presented with ambiguous stimuli and the researcher analyses and rates the subject based on their response. A story may be told, and the audience asked to give their feedback based on the story (Bryman & Bell, 2015).

Verbal Protocol Approach: In this case, the subject is required to talk aloud while performing a task; this enables the interviewer to understand the subject's thought process when handling a problem. A teacher may request a student to speak louder while doing a mathematical problem (Tolan, n.d.).

Repertory Grid Techniques: it involves subjecting the interviewee to circumstances that require his personality evaluation or how they relate their personality with the problem. The subject’s responses are analyzed through an established grid.

Mistakes While Asking Questions

While asking questions, the following mistakes should be avoided

Use of ambiguous terms : such questions have nothing specific in question and can only be responded to with an ambiguous answer (Survey Monkey, n.d.).

How often do you face challenges?

Long questions : composed of a long statement that does not add necessary value to the interview

The managerial task is complicated requiring one to exercise patience and longsuffering among other very important qualities; what are some of the managerial challenges that you face in your office since you assumed your current responsibility at Builder's Company?

Double-barreled questions : the question is structured in a way that more than two answers can be offered while the interviewer is seeking one answer.

What motivates you to work?

Very general questions: involve questions that cover a broad area that becomes confusing for the interviewee to respond to (Survey Monkey, n.d.).

What is your experience as a manager?

Leading questions : this group of questions provides a hint or a portion of the answer or preferred response (Schade, 2017).

Organizational culture is a hindrance to change, what are other hindrances?

Asking two questions in one : requires the responder to respond to two or more portions designed as one (Bryman & Bell, 2015).

What are some of the managerial challenges you face and how do you manage them?

Technical terms : involves the use of jargons or acronyms which are confusing to the interviewee and might only be known to the interviewer.
