Statement 1: "Research methods can be godly."
From a biblical perspective, I believe that the statement “Research Methods can be godly” is accurate in that it resonates with the character of God and His intentions for man. Arguably, God is seen to support the application of research as a way of acquiring knowledge, wisdom and insight for man. Proverbs 1: 2-7 clearly stipulates that for man to acquire wisdom, it is imperative that they seek it through gathering of information that builds their intellectual and spiritual ability to make informed decisions regarding their life. The scripture states, “to acquire wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight” and “let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance”. Notably, the verse shows that God instructs believers to adopt research and in-depth reflection of the information available to them so as to become wiser and thereby draw more informative conclusions in their life. Impartial and comprehensive research is therefore godly because it is one of the key tenets to the acquisition of knowledge and spiritual power of understanding.
Statement 2: "Research methods can be ungodly."
Research, according to the scripture, if abused can be ungodly. Essentially, the lord warns that if and when research is not used objectively may have far reaching negative consequences. For instance, in Proverbs 19:2, God warns that Desire in the absence of understanding may be very destructive in the life of an individual. Therefore, researchers in their endeavor to acquire more knowledge must master control of their desires even to learn more about the universe because if they do it hastily, it may be a reason for their demise. Precisely, the verse says, “2 Desire without knowledge is not good—how much more will hasty feet miss the way!” Evidently, research as one of the mediums to acquire knowledge may be ungodly if it is not done through the correct procedures including the protection of individual rights to privacy.
