This dissertation talks about the issue of HIV stigma facing positive gay men and how they cope through resilience mechanisms. According Gigliello (2018), men that have sex with other men are at an increased risk of contracting HIV. The results in this study indicate that all the negative challenges in HIV stigma corroborate with other past studies. In this study, resilience theory was used to address the issue of HIV stigma facing gay men to lessen the negative HIV stigma challenges.

Resiliency theory is defined as a developable capacity to bounce back from conflict, failure, and adversity or even positive events such as increased responsibility and progress. According to resilience theory, it is not the nature of adversity that is most significant but it depends on how people deal with it. Therefore, when people face misfortune, adversity, or frustration, resilience assists them to bounce back. Additionally, it helps people to survive, thrive, and even recover in the face and wake of misfortune. It also promotes interpersonal attachments, connections, and relationships between individuals in societies and communities they live in. 

In this dissertation, resilience theory concentrates on the perspective that the system is a mechanism that bolsters a positive response to any adversity, either chronic or acute. It is also a crucial factor in bisexual, gay, transgender, and lesbian people who experience stress. In this case, resilience theory is a protective framework for individuals that experience health as a chronic illness as in the HIV disease. The resilience theory has guided this study by its nature of widespread stigma, discrimination, and prejudices those gay men suffering from HIV face and the various negative HIV stigma outcomes from a physical and mental health point of view. The theory has paved the way for the development of purpose statements, problem as well as research questions as a logical transition towards the present framework. 

Emotional experiences of Transgender Individuals undergoing medical transitioning by Carter Eli Roberts 

This study addresses the lack of understanding that concerns the lived transgender emotional experiences that medically transition. In this dissertation, the positive and negative emotional responses were found during each stage of identity development ( Roberts, 2018 ). This study utilized the transgender identity development theory to address the lived experiences of people. 

Transgender identity development theory plays a significant role in people’s lives. According to this theory, transitioning is unique for every individual such as pursuing surgical interventions as well as hormone treatment. This theory also accounts for intersectionality by influencing transgender individuals’ experiences such as ethnicity, living in rural locations, spiritual beliefs, and other minority-related identities. As a result of these concerns, some transgender people may not disclose their transgender identity to other people, which may disconnect them from the community or development of one’s identity. It is important to engage in positive interactions with transgender-identified individuals to develop their internal sense of belonging as well as develop a healthy identity concerning a person’s authentic sense of self. 

Using this theory, the study addressed the lived experiences of transgender people during each transitioning process stage. The theory included the historical accounts about the feelings, anxiety, pride, confusion, and excitement of these people. In this case, the transgender identity development theory is suitable because it informs about the problem that lacks an understanding that relates to the emotional variance within every stage of the process of identity development. The theory also carried the purpose of this study by identifying the emotional variances that exist in each stage of transgender identity development by outlining what is expected in each step of development. The theory also answered questions about transgender individuals’ emotional experiences during their medical transition as they incorporate an authentic sense of self. 

Enhancing school connectedness for lesbian, gay. Bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual students (LGBTQIA) by Keith Bullock 

This dissertation explores the impact of the lack of institutional supports for lesbian, gay, transgender, intersex, bisexual, queer, and asexual students that can lead to severe consequences such as suicidal ideation, depression, and substance abuse ( Bullock, 2018 ). To expound further on this issue the researcher used social categorization framework to explain the importance of improving connectedness for the LGBTQIA students in school. 

Social identity theory specifies and predicts the circumstance under which people think of themselves as people or as group members. The theory also considers the effects of personal and social identities on group behavior and individual perceptions. The theory comprises of three stages. One of the stages is categorization. Categorization stage groups people in order to understand the social environment of people. Another stage of the social identity theory is social identification. The social identification stage allows people to adopt the identity of the group they have categorized themselves as belonging to. Finally, the social comparison stage enables people to compare themselves with other groups. This is significant to understand prejudice because once two groups identify themselves as competitors; they are forced to compete to maintain their self-esteem. 

The use of social identity theory assisted the researcher to understand how other people’s perceptions of LGBTQIA contributed to the lack of school connectedness. It tried to find negative things about the out-group to improve the self-image of the LGBTQIA students. The theory was also used to examine the two social classes and how members in that class can contribute to the sense of belonging in the social world. Therefore, social identity theory is significant in categorizing, identifying as well as comparing LGBTQIA with other social groups. 

In this dissertation, theoretical frameworks are important because they perceive, make sense of, and interpret data. The explanation in the above dissertations’ theoretical framework will assist people to understand the perspective and context of the study in an efficient and productive manner.
