As he headed into his 20s, he developed a proficient addiction. “I used to the drugs after work and on all weekends, and I would show up to work on the next day all hangover (Howden, 2010). When I played Less than Zero, the role was like the ghost of Christmas culture since I continued behaving like the character even after completing the movie,” Downey later explained. Despite facing difficulties in his personal life, he continued working hard in his career where he eventually won a Golden Globe Award in 2001 and later Screen Actors Guild Award which propelled his career.
