The article “Teamwork and technology key to finding fishing vessel” by Northcott (2021) provides an account of a failed underwater rescue mission by RCMP. In January 2021, RCMP was assigned a mission to locate a sunk trawler at the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia. The RCMP team used their newly-acquired remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV), which included multi-beam sonar, to get a better view of the deep seas. The ROV was warranted since the weather was poor and the tides were high, thus risky for divers. The Nova Scotia RCMP Underwater Recovery Team partnered with Canadian Coast Guards (CCG) and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) to conduct sonar explorations to identify the target object. The National Underwater Recovery Training Center (NURTC) was engaged to provide the new ROV and sonar after the weather failed to improve. The new ROV expand the search area to 10 square kilometers, and after several searches, the ROV found the trawler-Chief William Saulis. The trawler was 68 meters deep, which the RCMP and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) considered too risky for their divers.

The article “Teamwork and training save man from icy waters” by Poland (2021) provides an account of RCMP’s mission to rescue a man from icy waters. RCMP Cst. Mark Mc Taggart in involved in a rescue mission of a man who walked close to the Saskatchewan River and fell into the ice-cold water. Ice rescue missions are dangerous, and Mc Taggart referred to the Manitoba RCMP's ice rescue technician training, where officers were taught how to handle icy water rescues. Mc Taggart took his rescue equipment and walked on the ice to save the man. Other RCMP officers held the rope that Mc Taggart tied around his chest to anchor him if the thin ice broke. The man was tired, and freezing and Mc Taggart engaged him to remain calm till he REQ Coworkers from the RCMP had dispatched emergency medical services to take care of the man, and Mc Taggart being cleared to go home.

S/Sgt. Ben Sewell introduced the icy rescue training in 2011 following his stay in a remote community and travels on winter roads. The training was important as the province has more than 2300 kilometers of winter roads which pose a great risk to travelers. The two-days training, which happens annually, equips officers with self-rescue techniques, rescue philosophy, emergency handling, and rescue safety. From its introduction, more than 90 officers had undertaken the Manitoba RCMP ice rescue training.

The article “Making connections help officers serve diverse community” by Northcott (2021) explains how RCMP serves the community. RCMP has a Diversity and Indigenous Peoples Unit that operates in Surrey by engaging the indigenous people in community policing. Surrey is a city with about 520 000 residents with many diversities (Northcott, 2020). The city has south Asians, Chinese, Filipinos, Kwantlen, Katzie, and Semiahmoo. The Diversity and Indigenous Peoples Unit engages the community through cultural events, outreaches in worship centers, and safety meetings with newcomers. According to Rosy Takhar, the unit’s crime prevention and community services manager, the unit involving civilian employees and RCMP officers held 132 safety meetings in 2019 and involved 6000 people. The unit considers the differences in cultures and relationships with police for new residents to avoid crashing with new cultures. Therefore, the unit upholds the indigenous cultures through murals that show the people's acceptance and understanding in Surrey. By engaging with the community, the unit has managed to control the city with ease.
Things Learnt About RCMP
I have learned that the RCMP is a police unit that enforces the rule of law and responds to emergencies for rescue. RCMP aims at achieving safety and security for Canadian citizens. The unit engages in disaster management and rescue, such as sea rescues and icy water rescues. Furthermore, RCMP intends to maintain security in cities and populated places by raising awareness and involving community employees.
In RCMP's practices, I have learned that the unit is result-based, as evidenced from its preparations to handle emergencies and security needs. For example, in the mission to find the sunken trawler, Northcott (2021) notes that the unit aimed to increase efficiency and minimize risks. Also, from the icy water rescue mission, Poland (2021) narrates the emergency medical services' swift response to save the drowning man. Furthermore, RCMP collaborates with the community to ease security operations and promote joint security. The team is selfless, and it works together to save lives which is their primary mission. RCMP’s response with the ROV and the sonar in the Chief William Saulis' trawler emergency illustrates the unit's application of technology to solve modern complex problems. The team replaces divers with the ROV, minimizes the rescue time, and increases operations accuracy. Lastly, the unit aims to improve the officers' efficiency through annual training to respond better to emergencies.
Furthermore, RCMP prioritizes the safety of its officers. For example, the unit uses the ROV in deep-sea operations to secure the divers from rough tides and deep waters. Also, the Manitoba RCMP’s ice rescue technician training improves the officers' safety during rescue missions. The unit uses heated vehicles to ferry officers to the nurses for examination before being released. Taking care of the officers nurtures dedication and loyalty, which improves the unit's efficiency.
