The ‘Sausage Party’ is my favorite movie of all time, as it is bold enough to combine contemporary issues on matters such like religion and bureaucracy, and these continue to affect the world today. It adequately shows the lengths to which people go to impress one another, the dynamics of a community-from leadership to those who are led- and on to the promise of a better life beyond the one that we live. These beliefs and practices affect how we live and treat each other in a diverse community.
Propositions
This movie has positive elements to it. The characters that play Brenda and Frank do not give up on each other and try to save each others lives. There are two types of food, thin flatbread, called Lavash, a Middle Eastern, and Sammy, the Jewish bagel. They, initially, did not get along but learned to do so in spite of their different heritage. This is a good example for the viewers on how they can find peace in the Middle East.

This movie also has an interesting spin, religiously speaking. Some critics decry that this movie is not merely a funny cartoon but a secular story that tries to diminish religion. For instance, Frank the sausage realizes that the “Great Beyond” that he had hoped and longed for, for so long, is not half as good as he previously had thought it was. The “Great Beyond” was the land outside the supermarket (Sausage Party, 2016). It was a myth created by other non-perishable goods. This situation can be directly related to the religious scene in the society today. This myth was created to make things happier in the supermarket as the goods had something to live for.
The proposition about how religion is used to control the masses is brought out properly in the movie. Most of the foodstuffs in the supermarket were religious and believed in the afterlife that was the Great Beyond. Some characters also stated their beliefs on the afterlife like Lavash who talks about 77 bottles of virgin olive oil and Teresa praying to a St Chimichanga. Some of the characters believed that they should not limit themselves to rules of religion and societal standards and therefore decide to lead their lives with those around them at the time without seeking out a non-existent paradise. This movie brings out the realities of racial differences in our society and how they shape how and where live. We could see the class divide in our society (Sausage Party, 2016). This is positive as through it, we get to learn that they are different cultures in one world, which could come together for common, universal good. The foodstuffs put their differences aside and focused on the common enemy who are the “gods”. In our society, we should strive to work together to eradicate hunger, crime and other issues that affect us all.
The selection of foodstuffs for particular ethnicities showed insensitivity and stereotypes in how they relate to each other and religions as a whole. God and Jesus’ names were misused severally throughout the movie (Truit, 2016).
The ‘Sausage party’ showed a long and graphic sex scene that illustrated the varied sexual orientations and lifestyles of the foodstuffs. This may be beneficial in terms of teaching tolerance. The foodstuffs had different sexual orientations but did not judge each other and lived harmoniously. This scene also brought issues of waiting for the afterlife so as to live a full life. Brenda laments about how she had been waiting and saving herself for the Great Beyond yet is was right there with her. This is an interesting perspective on life and the afterlife and helps create a spark that asks us whether we are using too much energy waiting and saving ourselves for nothing (Hawksley, 2016).
The sex scene was too obscene and was difficult to watch. It was wild and threatened to remove the good that this movie tried to show. It may have been needlessly long as it made me uncomfortable and speechless; it served no purpose. Though it may preach sexual freedom, it does not outline the dangers of involving one’s self in sexual activities with people whose status you do not know. Slut shaming and derogatory terms; like fruits played the character of gays; are used repeatedly in the movie and this was termed offensive. Profane and crude language is also used several times throughout the movie by almost all the characters (Hawksley, 2016).
The movie also portrays the issues that are troubling the teenage Americans in the society with regards to drug and alcohol consumption. One teenager in the movie is seen to buy bath salts from the supermarket and proceed to inject them into his bloodstream to try and get a high. He hallucinates and is able to see the foodstuffs are living beings. The imperishable goods also hang out in some sort of hidden corners or caves where they would smoke marijuana. They tried to convince the other foodstuffs to partake of the drug (Assay, 2017). This is a positive as it brings forward the issues that are troubling American teens in the society today. There is easy access to dangerous drugs like bath salts that are ingested intravenously. Should there be some sort of legislation that would regulate materials used to produce this? Should they put a ban on manufacture of this product completely? The presence of self esteem issues in our society that make us do things we normally would not. This is something that Public Health System should address adequately (Assay, 2017).
The notion that drugs make you see the world as it is, is flawed, and promoted in this movie. It shows how the teenager used the bath salts and was able to see the foodstuff for who they really were and they proceeded to use them on the unknowing shoppers so as to start a revolt against the “gods” (Truit, 2016).
Conclusion
This is greatest movie of all time as it takes a bold step towards shining the light on the various issues that affect the society today. Though it may have some demerits due to the obscene way in which some issue were put forward, the positives gained from watching this movie outweigh the negatives. It shows that it important not to just believe but seek to prove something before taking it as the absolute truth. It also brings into focus the fact that there are different kinds of people in this world with different beliefs and cultures. These differences should not divide us but we should celebrate them. This movie makes you think about socially accepted behaviors, skepticism and how certain beliefs may limit how we think.
