Response 1: Brief Summary

The sense of touch is a critical faculty by which external forces or objects are perceived through contact with the body. People can use touch to gain crucial information about the natural environment. Touch is made up of many sensory systems. Each offers a different perceptual experience, ranging from physical pain and pleasure to movement. These sensory receptors are situated all over the body. The skin houses receptors that sense touch. Proprioception is a critical and hidden aspect of touch, which helps people to perceive their position in space. Deep in the subcutaneous layer, some sensors detect movement and position. Without them, an individual would have no positional sense of his/her body and its location in space. Touch is important because it informs every decision people make. It is possible to integrate touch with other senses and attain optimum results. For instance, it is essential to integrate vision and movement. It is possible to activate our touch and movement by watching someone else move. Different studies demonstrate that it is possible to replace vision with touch since touch can perceive the surrounding environment, just like vision. Touch is also important because it can send positive and negative emotions from infancy to adulthood. There are different researches that are being conducted to study touch and haptic interface. People can use haptic interfaces to recreate touch. For instance, a blind person using a cane to feel their way around.

Response 2: Questions about Vision and Touch

There are a number of questions that arise from watching the video. Firstly, how can people combine vision and the sense of touch? This question is essential because the two senses have different characteristics. I feel the video did not comprehensively cover the complex association between vision, touch, and proprioception. Another critical question is, how can someone with sensory deficit use vision to teach themselves essential actions such as walking? This question is important because people who lose the sense of touch cannot feel the ground they are walking on.
