The concepts of sensation and perception are used interchangeably by many people. However, there are differences between the two concepts. Perception refers to the organization, interpretation of sensory information. Sensory receptors refer to special neurons that are responsive to certain types of stimuli. Human experiences have a significant impact on perception. Human beings have diverse experiences in childhood. The experiences can be good or bad. The experiences are from friends, peers. The early childhood development shape and influence how children see the world. The experiences from society also determine and shape our perceptions. We have five senses: taste, sense of vision, sense of touch, sense of hearing, and smell. Human beings have sensory organs that offer balance information on body movement, body position, temperature variations, and pain alongside the five senses. Perceptions emanate from the sensory inputs.
Attention affects perception and sensation. Attention alters what a person senses against that which they perceive. For instance, for people engaging in an intensive argument, one person can choose to put loud music not to listen to the other person's argument. However, it could be difficult for such a person to say what the actual song was being played. This indicates how attention affects our perception. In a different case, western society could describe a beautiful woman as slim ladies while in other parts of the world, a beautiful woman can have different attributes as a society put it. Another factor that affects perception is motivation. One of the interesting observations includes a mother who is woken by her baby murmurs but not woken by other loud noises outside. The detection of signals has various applications, including traffic controller accuracy. Other factors that affect human perception include beliefs, prejudices, values, and other life experiences.
