Chapter 10
This chapter is focused on explaining the importance of occupational theory and how it can be applied to help children with developmental disabilities. It provides a description of a therapy model that is developed by using therapeutic sensory experiences with physical interactions for the purpose of improving learning, behavior and the overall quality of life. Children with sensory integrative problems can be assisted to do natural things through specialized therapy treatments. Comparisons are provided in relation to other approaches and this provides the reader with a measure of the effectiveness of this approach for children with these problems. Therapy using sensory integration works because it develops the basic functions that are used by the brain. The chapter discusses the sensory integration model as well as the proposed methods and techniques of making this approach work. The vocabularies that are used within the text include sensory integrative dysfunction, sensory integrative approach, occupational therapy, vestibular sensations, postrotary nystagmus, perceptual motor training, psychotherapy and play therapy.
Chapter 11
Parents play a very important role as far as sensory integrative approaches are concerned. They are responsible for influencing their child’s learning and behavioral outcomes to develop better sensory integration based on how they relate with their young ones. They enable children to develop brain functions through proper understanding, support and care. Consequently, the book discusses the steps that parents need to take so that they can help children with these problems. They need to recognize the problem and identify their child’s need, help the child to feel right about himself, control his environment, help him to learn how to play and seek professional help. The chapter explains how a parent can achieve these goals and help their children to develop sensory integration abilities. Key words include sensory integrative dysfunction, sensory integrative approach, sensory input, occupational therapy, vestibular and proprioceptive experiences, auditory and olfactory sensations,
