Chapter 10

This chapter is focused on explaining the importance of occupational theory and how it can be applied to help children with developmental disabilities. It provides a description of a therapy model that is developed by using therapeutic sensory experiences with physical interactions for the purpose of improving learning, behavior and the overall quality of life. Children with sensory integrative problems can be assisted to do natural things through specialized therapy treatments. Comparisons are provided in relation to other approaches and this provides the reader with a measure of the effectiveness of this approach for children with these problems. Therapy using sensory integration works because it develops the basic functions that are used by the brain. The chapter discusses the sensory integration model as well as the proposed methods and techniques of making this approach work.
