Sexual assault is a crime that takes several forms which range from rape or attempted rape. Also, unwanted sexual threats are termed as sexual assault since it involves touching a victim’s body in an unwanted way and without the other person’s consent. Date rape, on the other hand, normally occurs among people who know each other. This may involve people in a relationship and either of them wants to have sex without the other person’s consent. Normally, victims of date rape rarely come out to report such cases since their attackers are normally people they know.
There are several types of rapists who are classified according to their motives and behavior. Rapists may be classified according to their social competence and their impulsivity. Socially incompetent offenders are normally poor at interacting with people of the opposite sex and this makes it hard for a victim to fathom that they could fall victim to such an offender. Some rapists are also impulsive and they have the frequency of being offensive. They therefore graduate to repetitive offenders and even child molesters. One thing that an impulsive offender and a socially incompetent offender is that their actions are mostly premeditated and opportunistic. This is because rapists have a desire to commit the assaults and they normally identify their victims beforehand. Rapists tend to approach their victims with different motives. This is seen whereby socially incompetent rapists tend to make those around them think that they are incapable of doing such actions. On the other hand, impulsive offenders tend to attack their victims surprisingly since they have learnt their victim’s life patterns. Therefore, the mode of attack is what creates the difference between these two type of rapists.

Sexually violent crimes tend to have a psychological impact on the victims. This is because most of the rape victims tend to be socially withdrawn since they feel as if those around them are judging them. Also, date rape victims suffer in silence since they feel that if they call out the actions of their attackers, family members or the attackers may withdraw their support to them. This makes them anti-social, withdrawn and some of them end up in depression due to stigma.
