At the very beginning of the interview, one of the most significant challenges that I encountered was trying to build a rapport with the interviewee, which is seen as one of the essential elements towards defining success during an interview. However, I was able to use my listening skills effectively with the expectation being towards providing the interviewee with an opportunity of having to talk while I listened. On the other hand, I was able to engage with the client in a practical way considering that I sought to ensure that he was comfortable way before the interview. Before having to provide him with the questions, I sought to make the relevant inquiries on whether the client was pleased while providing him with an overview of the questions to allow him to get prepared mentally.
While focusing on the session, I must point out two key areas that I believe may have been of great strength to me as an interviewer. The first area of strength was the level of attentiveness towards the client, which played a critical role in creating some positive relationship with the client. During the entire interview, I sought to remain very attentive to everything that the client said, which not only helped in ensuring that I was able to get everything that he was talking about but also helped in building the rapport for the interview. The second area of strength was the fact that I was able to keep within the theme of the interview while referring the questions as part of the interview process. I engaged in a process allowing me to define the theme of the interview with the focus being towards achieving positive results.

In the closure of the interview, I provided the client with several indications before the interview ended with the sole focus being towards ensuring that he would know when the interview was over. For example, in the last question that I posed to the client, I used the terms, ‘In the final question,…’ The use of these terms helped in ensuring that the client was well aware of the fact that indeed the interview was coming to a close after his response to the question. Additionally, I sought to get affirmation from the client that indeed the information that he had given me as part of the interview was accurate, according to his knowledge, by reading out some of the vital information highlighted. The primary interview skill used as part of this engagement was open communication, as I provided the client with an opportunity for participation as part of his understanding of the questions raised as part of the interview.
One of the critical areas that I believe I performed well during the interview was on the territory of having to keep up with the theme of the interview to avoid instances where I would go out of the set-out topic. I was able to ensure that the engagement with the client focused on the expectation as part of the theme for the interview. The area that I would like to improve is on the opening of the interview considering that I believe that I had a challenge in trying to create that positive connection with the client from the very beginning. However, this changes as I settle into the interview, as I find it much more relaxed in trying to engage with the client as part of the interview process.
