The study aims to analyze the connection between smartphone use and addiction. The study further analyses the concept of smartphone addiction, together with its incidence, psychological aspects, research methodologies, and related psychiatric comorbidities. Notably, studies on this subject have evolved mainly through contents and applications . Since its inception, the anomalous usage of smartphones has called into action the establishment of whether its continued use or abuse could result in addiction . This issue is synonymous with the existence of behavioral addictions rather than substance addictions.

The study hypothesizes that excessive use of smartphones over a long duration is the primary cause of smartphone addiction. The study targets a population sample of 50 participants who are smartphone users. The ages vary from 19 to 22 years. The study adopts the qualitative methods of data collection through administration of questionnaires. The study also uses correlation of previous data based on the past literature on the subject to come up with an all-round data.

The study finds that smartphone addiction exists, but the criteria used by the studies to validate this existence varies. The study also establishes that smartphone addiction indicates a distinct user-profile that distinguishes it from internet addiction. With evidence not pointing to the influence of socioeconomic and cultural status, the abuse pattern of smartphones is highest among young people, mainly females. Notably, the addiction coming from smartphone usage has mostly been linked with personality variables that include neuroticism, extraversion, self-identity, impulsivity, and self-image. On the same note, anxiety, sleep disturbance, depression, and stress have also been linked with the problematic use of smartphones.
