This article is titled ‘One Size Does Not Fit All - Adapting Social and Emotional Learning for Use in Our Multicultural World’, it is based on the many cases that surround children that are culturally and linguistically challenged. It highlights the many stressors that affect these children and how it impacts their learning and social interactions.
According to Olivio (N.d), lot of children that are culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) face a plethora of issues. Some of these issues include neighborhoods that are rough, households that have single parents, limitations in English proficiency, poverty, minority status and more. This article has enlightened me a lot on how these issues contribute to major life stressors in CLD children and this tends to result in adverse outcomes like teenage pregnancies, antisocial and delinquent behavior. Social and emotional learning (SEL) programs that can benefit children with multicultural backgrounds would be beneficial to children that are CLD.

I have from this article that SEL programs are designed to teach children many things which will greatly assist them to be adept in social interactions and academic achievements. They will be able to develop a moral conscious and make better decisions. Additionally, the SEL program will help teach children to be self-aware. Children will be more aware of their moods, emotions and possible symptoms that are related to depression and other social issues. Another is they will have self-awareness; this involves the understanding and appreciation of other people’s feelings and perspectives. Also, the teachers will educate the children on how to manage themselves. The children will be able to connect their emotions, thoughts and behavior which will ultimately lead to self-management. The SEL program would teach the children to develop social skills. These skills would focus on being able to effectively communicate in order to solve issues and get a better understanding on situations. Lastly, they would learn skills that would be beneficial when it comes to decision making. Such skills would include learning to handle pressure and stress and the fact that they would be effective at communication would assist in making good decisions ( Olivio, N.d). This article helped me understand and align how the mentioned benefits of a SEL program are all related to the five core CASEL competencies.
