According to studies that have been conducted in the past, it has been noted that the many people are obedient to the authorities even when asked to do something that may cause pain to others. Milgram conducted an experiment in 1963 and concluded that many ordinary people could willingly apply dangerous and painful electric shocks to people who are innocent, this is if they were asked to do so by a man wearing a white lab coat. Subsequent experiments have shown that this has not changed. Researchers have used different methods to determine the conflict that exists between an individual’s conscience and his or her obedience to the authority.
In my case, I will consider the social issue of death penalty. If I were a judge in a case whose penalty was a death sentence, I would consider various factors before I make the judgment. First, I would have considered the complainant in the case. He or she would be expecting justice to be served. In this case, the only way that he or she will be satisfied that justice has been served. I will also consider the victim, he or she will have family members who expect him or her to be given lighter sentencing. In my conscience, I will be considering these cases before making the sentencing. In as much as the death sentence will seem as harsh, I will have to explain to the defendant about the situation and ensure that they understand the situation. I will sentence the defendant to the death sentence if he or she deserves the sentencing, I will also try to find the other options apart from the death sentence. This way I will ensure that justice is served.
