Social justice can be defined as the proper and fair administration of laws that conform to the natural law, which states that all people have to be treated as equals and with no prejudice. In this particular case, Charo, a mother of five, was going through social injustice. She is a victim of domestic violence. She went through severe neglect and abuse as a child; she was also raped when she was a young adult. After getting married, her husband continued the abuse. She had received death threats from her husband, and she would be forced to wear short skirts and bleach her hair. Her alcoholic husband would also give her relentless beatings in front of their children. Charo is receiving unfair treatment because she is a female who is not valued by her husband. Her social justice is violated because her husband was treating her as a less valuable person. Domestic abuse falls under social injustices.
The social workers work closely with domestic violence victims. In the case of Charo, several interventions could be fruitful. Requesting for the deportation of the abusive husband was a good step because Charo would now enjoy her freedom and raise her children in a safe home. The next important intervention would be providing social services to help Charo and her children during her difficult times. These services include family and caregiver support programs, advocacy and counselling for the abuse victims, alternative living arrangements, and educational programs. A social worker should ensure that Charo and her children are safe and that they treated in a better way, and their rights are not violated. The people breaking the rights of others intentionally should be arrested and sentenced, or punished for their actions, like Charo’s husband who was deported back to his country of origin.
