Child abuse and neglect have emerged as critical subjects in the recent years pointing to physically abusive parents that have shown difficulties in realizing emotions of children. Additionally, this caliber of parents has envisaged biased attributions and perceptions about their sons and daughters (Camilo et al., 2016). As a result, they have behaved aggressively in a manner that places the children at risk of stress, depression, physical, and emotional damage.

Child abuse and neglect prevalence rates in the society today remain an issue that requires intervention. In the US, for example, it is estimated that 702,000 children suffered from abuse and neglect in 2014 (National Children’s Alliance, n.d.). The statistics also indicate that parents were the principal perpetrators. Additionally, neglect emerged as the prevalent form of maltreatment.

The perpetuation of child abuse and neglect arises from parental biases, physiological reactions and emotion recognition, and aggressive behaviors from parents (Camilo et al., 2016). Children suffer psychological, emotional, and physical challenges, trauma, and neglect. As a result, children suffer self-esteem issues and may develop rebellious traits in future lives in the aftermath of these childhood experiences. Academic problems can emerge leading to slow learning. Children can also suffer dissociation, increased hyper-vigilance, and difficulties in sleeping.

Scholars have established implicit measures and experimental designs in assessing parental behaviors and cognitions leading to child abuse and neglect (Camilo et al., 2016). The evaluation of child physical abuse risks has engaged children within real family contexts. Those that have a history of abuse emerge as the high-risk victims of these atrocities. Scholars suggest a collective societal role in alleviating this problem. Reporting cases of suspected child abuse or neglect goes a long way in saving the life of the child. Such cases can be addressed to local social service and health sectors, religious groups, hospitals, social workers, and counselors. Child protection targets the attainment of objectives such as stopping the abuse and enables the victim’s family to become loving and accommodative.
