What characteristics do cults typically have?

Cults are characterized by their shared commitment to the ideological extremity that is centralized on a charismatic leader to whom the devotion of followers is usually directed. Historically, cults have been in existence, venerating their novel beliefs and practices that are mostly not well understood.

How does conformity play a role in cults?

Conformity makes the members pledge their allegiance to the charismatic leader who serves as their object of worship regardless of the fact that the member bears no meaningful accountability. The members are bound to do everything that is consistent with the interest of the leader and not their own interests since the original principles that may have attracted the members to the cult may have lost power.

Why do cult members conform?

Members conform because they are naturally inclined to the leader, and they already have a relationship established over time. Others are motivated by the promised rewards. As such, due to their inability to voice their opposition to the cult principles and the fact that all other members model the absolute faith, they end up conforming. Also, the conformity comes with earlier exploitations in the form of sexual or economic exploitations by the ruling coterie.

What is the role of obedience in cults? Why is this important?

Obedience makes it easy for the leader to remain influential and in control. Both formal and informal systems are used for commanding obedience, and the members are aware that internal disagreements or external scrutiny are not tolerated. Therefore, the leaders are very persuasive, leading to the ultimate indoctrination of the members. It is important because it makes the indoctrination process and subsequent conformation because members want to escape shame, guilt, and fear.

Discuss the social roles of cult members.

The cults seek to give meaning to the life of the vulnerable members who have undergone some form of loss. With the use of the laid down devotional practices, cults offer psychological relief to members by occupying a place in their thought, granting them a sense of belonging. Through cognitive dissonance, the members remain trapped.
