Question 1

Social cognition is the active process of storing, retrieving, and processing encoded information about an individual and other members of the society. Schemas are described as a representation of behavior or thoughts that is in the form of a model; this means the pattern of behavior and thoughts are categorized in relation to their information. According to Leahy (2018), Schemas are a notable theory that individuals use to arrange new information that will be used for future reference. In effect, through the activation of schemas, individuals are capable of making decisions and judgments that go beyond the current information available; the thought process differentiates the social cognition within different individuals. The differences in social cognition are either analytical or holistic. Therefore, the link between social behavior and psychology is less accessible. To understand the relationship between social cognition and schemas, one must recognize that the latter is activated unconsciously; judgment is made through assumptions and the information gained from specific social situations. On the other hand, social cognition is specific to the experiences influenced by the presence of other people.

Question 2

Schemas are important as they allow us to make shortcuts in the interpretation of the large amounts of information we encounter daily ( Leahy 2018). Nevertheless, this psychological framework more often makes us exclude new information to only focus on what we believe. In effect, schemas establish stereotypes that make it difficult to register new information contrary to our established beliefs and ideas. My identified schemas include going out to eat a lot and preferring being indoors than attend social events. I believe I go out to eat a lot because I don’t see the point of cooking food that I won’t finish. Also, eating out provides me with different menus I can choose from. Staying indoors is also very peaceful. I prefer limited social interactions that are drama free. I believe that the more people around you, the more the unnecessary drama.

Question 3

Schemas are useful as they play a significant role in the daily learning processes. For instance, I am more likely to pay attention to things that resonate with my current schemas; I am more likely to notice new restaurants and new meals. Schemas also impact how quick individuals are susceptible to learning and allow us to think quickly. Notably, individuals are likely to grasp new information that is related to their current schemas and assimilate the new information.
