States with weak institutions are prone to having social upheaval such as corruption, terrorism, poverty among others. All these issues make the country suffer from economic underdevelopment, damaged assets and it also reduces the capacity of the state to function effectively (Duffield, 2014). In developed nations, there are no significant social upheavals as compared to developing states. For instance, in states that have weak institutions, the highest percentage of the population is suffering in poverty. The majority of the country's wealth is in the hands of the elites. In contrast, it is not the case for the developed countries, because the class of people living in poverty is lesser than the middle-class income earners.
Some of the reasons that make the developed states free from social upheaval include the presence of checks and balance system which ensures that corruption does not exist in these countries. There are laws which are set to ensure that those who people who take part in corruption face penalties. These laws and regulations put in place prevent an occurrence of social upheaval (Duffield, 2014). Examples of these developed countries include the United States, France, and England among others. They have put in place governing bodies which are mandated to generate budgets and design plans which are used to allocate resources adequately.

Bad governance has primarily contributed to social upheaval in developing countries. The elites are driven by their gains. In most cases, they make laws in their favor and forget the reason as to why they hold those leadership positions. They neglect their noble cause of serving the nation which is supposed to be the ultimate goal of every leader ( Rist, 2014) . For developed countries, leaders take positions with the aim of serving the state genuinely and upholding integrity. The laws are set to apply to everybody, and no one is above the law in these states.
Consequently, social upheavals in developing countries act as a source f social tensions. To deal with this, various organizations can be set up to address the underlying causes if the upheavals. For instance, in the case of bad governance, the organizations can direct their efforts towards improving the quality of ‘civility of policing”. Additionally, they can improve the quality of social services offered to the public and provide employment opportunities for the youth (Duffield, 2014). A majority of civil unrest have been carried out by youths who are influenced to take part in it with a promise of monetary reward. This can act as a significant step in reducing the likelihood of social upheaval.
