My childhood friend has had many problems to deal with in his life. Currently, he is battling drug addiction. My friend needs to be helped to deal with this problem because he needs to control his addiction. Otherwise, he will end up dying just like his father.
Essentially, through a solution-focused therapy, my friend could be helped to cope with the addiction. As a solution-focused therapist, I would operate under the assumption that my friend has the inherent skills to be able to change in his life – he only needs help in refining and identifying these skills. I know my friend very well, and he has previously solved problems in his life and probably has some ideas of how he can solve the problem of addiction. Thus, my friend needs a change in his life to a certain extent, and I will help him clarify his goals.

As a solution-focused therapist, I will ask him three specific forms f questions which will help in guiding each session. The first kind of question I will ask him is coping questions. I will ask him somehow how he manages to keep moving forward despite the adversity he might encounter. These questions will particularly be helpful if he is feeling powerless or helpless in coming to grips with his addiction. I will ask him questions like: how do you manage to get through each day? How do you keep going each day when there seems to be no hope?
The second set of questions which I will ask him are known as miracle questions. These questions will help him see the future in which the addiction problem he is facing is not in his life. Essentially, miracle questions will help him to explain how his life would look different if the addiction did not exist, and this will help him to identify the practical steps he can take to change how he addresses and solve the addiction problem. Lastly, I will engage him in scaling questions – by using a scale of 0-10 to assess how he is progressing, or he is dealing with the addiction. These questions will ask him to rate his treatment progress, motivation doe change, success, coping strategies, problems, satisfaction, goals, and priorities. The questions will help engage my friend to cope with drug addiction.
