I think the idea of spanking children is not an effective way to instill discipline on the children. Spanking involves impacting pain on a child with the hope that the child will develop a desirable behavior. However, I think spanking of children can only worsen the relationship between the parent and the child by instilling fear. Instead of a behavior change, the child can only develop noncompliance and aggression both in the short and long run ( Research on Spanking: It’s Bad for ALL Kids , 2019). A recent study has shown that the more a child is pranked, the more they develop aggression, antisocial behavior, cognitive difficulties and mental health problem ( Taylor et al., 2018 ). It is therefore not effective, but a harmful way of disciplining a child. The most compelling reasons not to prank a child is that it leads to development of awkward behaviors such as being antisocial, aggression and cognitive difficulties. The most compelling reasons to prank a child is based on the idea that instilling pain will lead to a child dropping the undesirable behavior.
In comparison, spanking in Sweden is a rare occurrence and is seen as an ineffective way to discipline a child. It is viewed as a way to increase unacceptable behavior in a child. This is contrary to Singapore where spanking is widely used and seen as one of the most effective ways to make a child drop undesirable behavior. Singapore wants children to comply with the laws of society and live up to standards. On the classmates’ comments, Steven Schumacher makes a valid argument by noting that spanking undermines the trust between the child and the parent and thus should not be used as a form of discipline. I think this is quite a valid point backed with evidence. Spanking children can make them develop a self-protective attitude, and this can derail their relationship with their parents.
