The state trooper position seemed interesting for a number of reasons. First is the honor that is attached to the 100-year old career. New Jersey State troopers have been a part of law enforcement in the state for the last 100 years and it is an honor for people who are interested in law enforcement to be a part of this tradition. Secondly, state troopers are law enforcement agents just like police but with an even wider jurisdiction. State troopers operate across the state unlike police officers who operate under particular jurisdictions within a state. State troopers also have a wide range of roles under their constitution. They are also expected to be conversant with a wide range of state and constitutional law which goes well with my interest in matters law enforcement and maintaining social order.

State trooper relates with a parole officer in that they are both positions where the occupants participate in maintenance of social order albeit in different ways. State troopers enforce federal and state laws while parole officers assist former convicts with reintegration into the society and also living as law abiding citizens. State troopers focus on the prevention of crime and enforcement of laws while parole officers assist former law breakers in settling back into the society and living within the laws. The positions are complementary to each other with one being proactive (state trooper) and the other being reactive (parole officer). In addition, both careers require sufficient knowledge of state and constitutional law.
