The success of students depends on the equal balance between his or her strengths and weaknesses. As a teacher, I will use three basic assessment techniques to ensure that National Youth Service students are able to attain better results.

Summative assessment

I will use this technique to asses the extent of learner’s progress in attaining the assessment criteria which is used to gauge if the intended outcomes of a project have been attained. This technique usually contributes to the final grade awarded to the student at the end of the course (Dolin, Black, Harlen & Tiberghien, 2018) . In conclusion, summative assessment is used to quantify the intended achievements. It is used to make a rational decision and identify weaknesses and strength of each student. The technique entails the use of structured questioned at the end of each course. The data collected will be useful in planning the lesson plan, areas of weakness will be given priority. The data will also help for future planning in areas that appear challenging to many learners.

Ipsative assessment

It is based on the previous work of the learners. Externally set standards are used to gauge the performance of each student. Each learner is expected to work toward her or his best. I will use this technique to identify the underperforming students as well as the key areas of weakness. It emphasizes the progress of each learner. In a situation of National Youth learners, I will use the externally set standards to gauge the progress of each learner rather than the average marks. It will help me formulate a working plan to help struggling students.

I will use the help of specialist teachers in the different fields to provide support to the struggling learners. Students with similar weaknesses will be kept in one group and a teacher who has specialized in that field of study will be assigned a group to work with. Creating groups and assigning them special teachers will help improve general performance of the learners.

I would recommend the use of continuous assessment technique to ensure that the struggling students are on par with the rest of the group. Continuous assessment will help the teacher to identify areas which are not clearly understood. Continuous assessment is done at the end of each and every topic. Constant assessment and use of special teachers will enhance the performance of the students.
