Stress and anxiety are some of the mental issues affecting students in institutions of higher learning. It is important to address this topic because of its correlation with depression, anxiety, and suicidality among university students especially those aged between 18 and 24 years. Evidence shows that there are common stressors that affect college students. For instance, pressure to excel academically, time pressure, and separation from their families (Bhujade, 2017, p.748). As the author submits, other factors include complexity of reading materials, and fear of failure.

Surprisingly, mental disorders are major contributors to the total disease burden among young adults living in the United States (Eisenberg, Gollust, Golberstein, Hefner, 2007). In this case, the information thereof will be crucial in enhancing suicide prevention among the students in the U.S. Bhujade (2017) explains that college students cope with broad but unique stress during their schooling. The author asserts that the students have to deal with new friends, alternative thinking ways, roommates, lifestyle, and exposure to a different culture besides academic stressors. In light of this note, the likelihood of college students developing stress and anxiety is quite high as they struggle with inadequacy feelings while coping with the stressors.

Stress and anxiety affects many students. Eisenberg et al. (2007) state that stress affects 13.8% and 11.3% of undergraduates and graduates respectively. Notably, females have higher prevalence compared to male students. Studies indicate that stress affects students negatively with some of them developing suicidal thoughts. Stress among students creates a burden not only to their families but also to the institutions. Bhujade (2017) submits that colleges have to initiate programs to create awareness, counselling centers to help the affected students. Expounding on the same note, the scholar says that there is need to form student health committees comprising of professionals including clinical psychologists and psychiatrist whose mandate should go beyond dealing with the students but also engaging with the teachers on the problem. Illustratively, stress and anxiety among the college student affects many stakeholders in the education and health sectors.
