The field of clinical psychology incorporates treating human problems with scientific psychology. Like any other courses, clinical psychology has both its advantages and disadvantages and one should beware of these before deciding to venture in the field (Kroger, 1977, p.400).

Advantages of having subspecialties in clinical psychology

Subspecialty in clinical psychology is an advantage since it means there is a bright job outlook. Statistics by the US Bureau of labour shows an unexpected growth of 22% up to the year 2020. There is need for subspecialists in clinical psychology to counsel the aging population. The median salary for masters holders in psychology is $68,640. They also help others by treating illness, bringing families together and providing counselling to the disadvantaged. It is a fulfilling career and one can feel accomplished when helping people. The diversity is also interesting since it enables one to work in different social settings and interact with different people every time. Lastly, it has a wide range of specialization. This enables one to choose their areas of interest based on their skills. This then gives clinical psychologists a choice to work with people by counselling them.

Disadvantages of having subspecialties in clinical psychology

According to Kroger (1977) subspecialties in clinical psychology can be stressful. Students who pursue this course sometimes find it thorough because it can be demanding. As a profession on the other hand, one has to deal with different people that need help and sometimes share disturbing information. In order to succeed in this environment, one needs a calm head. Clinical psychologists sometimes work during odd hours. Even those with private practice from time to time find themselves working in the evenings and during the weekend in order to serve the patients. Lastly, becoming clinical psychologists requires one to have studied for several years in school. One first needs to obtain a bachelors degree which normally takes 4 years to complete, then obtain a masters degree that takes 3 years. This not the best option for those that want quick and easy profession.
