Based on the texts that you read, how does Sufism differ from mainstream Sunni Islam in its emphases and devotional practices? Do you see these differences as complementary or in tension with Sunni teachings and practices?

There exist a classic difference between Sufi and Sunni based on their emphasis and devotional practices. Sufi remains basically an offshoot of the mystical division of Islam whereas Sunni is a progeny of the conventional Islamic version. Sunnis emphasize the wisdoms and Sunah of the holy prophet while Sufi aligns itself to the basic and spiritual practices.

Both Sufi and Sunni are Islam and possess similar beliefs but a Sunni is highly entangled with matters of the world while Sufi is highly anxious about the world thereafter. Sunni trails on the God sent the life code in the form of Quran and Sunah. The Sunni’s follow these codes and consequently work to ensure they attain their motive of getting to heaven as a sure reward for their good deeds while in the world. The Sufi is fearful of Allah and their teachings and literature involve fear of hell. On the other hand, Sufi advocates for everlasting and divine love instead of fear. The Sufi’s core motive is to achieve internal spiritual illumination through prayers, meditation and by abandoning the desires of the world. Sunni has a firm belief in the indirect style to the enlightenment of the soul while Sufi tries to feel and experience God with the assistance of a direct approach to God in confidence.

The difference between Sufism and Sunni Islam is in tension with Sunni teachings and practices. They are broadly different since Sufi contradicts most of the teachings and beliefs on the Supreme Being. Most of the Sunni sections have no belief in mysticism and view Sufism as defiant and they misinterpret religion. Both Sunni and Sufi are Muslims who have completely dissimilar schools of thoughts on their religion and fundamentally their beliefs.
