It should be alarming that the Syrian conflict has caused the death of more than 360,000 people. Besides, it is reported that more than 192,000 people are missing, and there is a probability that a significant percentage of them are dead (BBC, 2019). The Syrian conflict began as a peaceful demonstration against the government, partly influenced by the popular Arab Spring, and mainly triggered by the high cost of living, unemployment, and corruption. Nevertheless, it is becoming evident that armed struggle is causing devastating consequences; hence, there is need for sober dialogue among the involved parties.

The international community needs to compel the government and the opposition to reach a truce. Firstly, it is crucial for countries such as Russia and the United States to play neutral in this conflict. The situation is presently worse because Bashar Al Assad (President of Syria) believes the opposition and rebel groups are being strongly backed by western countries, and that the conflict broke out because of interference by external powers. Russian leaders also need to be made aware that the citizens of Syria also have genuine demands, and should be given a chance to suggest how they would want to be governed.

Consequently, it is necessary to have a power-sharing deal in Syria between the groups involved in conflict. Prolonging the conflict or sustained use of force will only make Syria degenerate into a state akin to modern Iraq. If the government refuses to negotiate, international sanctions should be applied by all the key players in the conflict, especially Russia and the United States. Similarly, if the rebel groups shun away talks, everything should be done to cut their supplies, especially weapons, food, and funds. Evidently, this conflict can be stopped if Russia and the United States think about the people, and compel the opposing sides to reach a truce.
