One of the most effective ways of connecting with one’s audience is finding a common ground with them while conveying information to them. This involves being selfless and shifting the focal point from oneself to others (audience). It also involves learning how their listeners think and their perception of the world and attempting to think and perceive the world as they do in order to effectively communicate with them.
Failure to connect with the audience erects a barrier to effective communication. Other barriers to overcome include language and cultural barriers, which are best overcome by making effort to speak to the people in the language they understand and trying to relate to their culture. This is attributed to the fiction that most audience would appreciate the slightest efforts made by one addressing them to see things in their point of view in terms of their culture or communicating in the language they understand.
Another way of connecting with the audience is being open with the goals and purpose which help the audience buy into the ideas being conveyed to them in order to relate to them. The barrier related to this method of connection is withholding of information from ones subjects. This makes them feel like outsiders and prevent them from relating to the idea.
Another way of connecting to audience is by paying attention to them and listening to their interest by listening to their questions and addressing their problems. The barrier integral to this is ignoring the voice of ones listeners or subordinates. This establishes a barrier that obstructs communication between the parties.
