Young adulthood stage in life marks a point of transition for most people. “It is a stage crowded with much crisis as the young adult tries to fit in and tackle challenges” (Merriam, 1984, p. 23). Tasks during young adulthood are built around family, work, and social life. A young adult would want to find a partner, learn to live with one, get children, and manage the family. Finding a stable occupational career is also a critical task at this stage. As Wrosch posit, in the social sphere, the same person gets to make friends outside marriage and assumes responsibilities in the wider community (Wrosch, 2015, p. 18).
One major challenge during young adulthood is peer pressure. Most young adults crave to fit in. “The desire to belong to a ‘cool’ troop has forced many young adults into taking drugs and alcohol, and even staging competitions on who loses the most weight” (Merriam, 1984, p. 20). A young adult in college may harbor feelings of worthlessness and get depressed, hence failing to attend classes or drops out of college. Without fit role models, dating life for young adults become a big barrier. One may find self in abusive relationships, addiction to love, or total confusion concerning love and sex.

The challenges and tasks faced by young adults now are slightly different from those faced by our grandparents. “This is major because of the advanced technology (which influence lifestyles and entertainment), increased family disintegration, and general degradation of morals in the society” (Merriam, 1984, p. 12). Media has a psychological impact on the daily lives of most young adults. Everyone seems to seek attention online and stand out. Some may feel inadequate and insecure when they see their friends posting photos or information of certain progress, which they have not achieved. Media can force young adults to fake lifestyles for the sake of showing off.
