In this TED Talk, Laura Bain speaks about living with Bipolar Type II disorder. She also speaks of the trials and tribulations associated with this disorder. Bipolar disorder is a type of mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings. An individual with this type of mental disorder tends to have alternating periods of emotional highs (mania) and lows (depression) (Bain, 2011). In her informative talk, Laura Bain blends insight and experience as she takes us through the euphoric highs and painful lows associated with bipolar type II disorder, as well as the destruction this disorder can leave in its wake.

This paper will provide a summary of the main ideas presented in the TED Talk. The paper will then outline the new ideas learned from the informative talk, whether I agree or disagree with the main ideas, and how I might apply what I have learned from the TED Talk to my life. Also, the paper will provide additional research on the topic discussed in the TED talk. The paper will include a discussion of what I found most interesting from the additional research. Lastly, discuss at least one idea/question for follow-up research on the topic presented on the TED Talk.
Summary of Main Ideas
Bipolar is a mental disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, which include mania and depression. When an individual becomes depressed, he or she feels sad or hopeless most of the time. In addition, the individual may lose interest or pleasure in most activities. The symptoms of this mental health condition are more severe. The symptoms include depression, insomnia or hypersomnia, lack of interest or pleasure in almost all activities, significant weight loss or weight gain, significant loss or gain of appetite, psychomotor agitation or retardation, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness, and recurrent thoughts of death (Bain, 2011).
According to Bain (2011), the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is a very useful diagnostic tool used by healthcare professionals and other experts to treat patients with mental health conditions. By clearly defining the criteria for a mental disorder, such as the criteria for bipolar type II disorder, the DSM ensures that the diagnosis of the mental health condition is both accurate and consistent. To manage bipolar disorder, patients often seek the help of counselors. In the case of Bain, she sought the help of a counselor who provided cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) sessions. CBT is a type of psychotherapy that is used by counselors, healthcare professionals, and other experts to help individuals with bipolar disorder and other mental conditions to manage their condition. CBT helps manage the ups and downs or the highs and lows associated with bipolar disorder. In addition to behavioral therapies, there is a need to seek medications to treat the condition. Through medications, one can treat the symptoms of bipolar disorder.
What I learned
I have learned a number of new things from the TED Talk. The first is the use of CBT to manage the symptoms of bipolar disorder. I always thought bipolar disorder could only be managed through medications. The second new thing that I learned is the use of DSM to accurately diagnose mental health conditions. I learned that this tool could be used to not only diagnose bipolar disorder but also treat the condition.
Do you agree or disagree with the Main Ideas? Why?
The informative TED talk blends insight and experience. It provides first-hand information on the euphoric highs and painful lows of bipolar disorder. As such, I agree with the main ideas presented in the TED Talk. This is because the information provided in the informative talk is accurate and reliable. Bain provides first-hand information about living with bipolar type II disorder, as well as the trials and tribulations associated with this condition. Thus, since the TED Talk is given by an individual living with bipolar, I agree with the main ideas presented in the talk.
Applying what I have learned
There are a number of ways I can apply what I have learned from the TED Talk. First, I have learned that the DSM can be used to diagnose and treat mental health disorders. In the future, I will use this tool to diagnose and treat patients with mental health conditions. I will also use CBT to help these patients manage their conditions.
Additional Research
To further my understanding of this topic, I carried out additional research to learn more about bipolar disorder. Specifically, I researched about what causes this mental health condition. What I found most interesting from the research is that the exact cause of the bipolar disorder is unknown (Ayano, 2016). However, healthcare professionals, psychologists, and other experts believe that a number of factors cause this condition. These factors include biological differences and genetics (Ayano, 2016). With regard to biological differences, experts believe that individuals with this mental health condition have physical changes in their brains. With regard to genetics, studies have found that bipolar disorder is more common in individuals with the first-degree relative with the condition. However, the gene responsible for causing this condition has not been found.
Discuss at least one idea/question for follow up research of this topic
As stated in the TED Talk, some of the ways to manage bipolar disorder include counseling and CBT. However, there is limited research on the effectiveness of these methods. As such, there is a need to determine how effective counseling and CBT therapies are in bipolar. With this in mind, the research question will be:
Research question : How effective are therapies like counseling and CBT in bipolar?
