Teenage pregnancies have alarmingly increased in the contemporary world with resultant social economic and psycho-social effects.

Socioeconomic Concerns of Teen Pregnancy

Teen pregnancy leads to the attainment of lower levels of education. Notably, education forms the backbone of someone’s social as well as economic perspectives. Besides, learning is optimal at the teenage stage; hence, teenage pregnancy tends to alter the positive side of a teen’s social life as well as education, which forms an economic level of a young adolescent parent (World Health Organization, 2018).

Teenagers who experience early pregnancies stand at a higher risk of leading a single parent life, which embroils numerous financial challenges; thus, they are likely to lead a life of poverty. The parents tend to lead a struggling life to provide basic needs for the child leading a miserable life (Kirchengast, 2016).

Normally, labor is equivalent to the amount of economic income. However, pregnancy at teenage stage reduces the number of individuals that necessitate employment. Despite having working with pregnancy, the adolescent mother provides low labor; hence the income is much lesser.

Teenage pregnancy leads to a limitation of investments for those affected. Usually, investing to attain the right channel of generating income is significantly reduced for teenagers who are forced by the situation to make limited investments to focus on the necessities of life.

Psycho-social Concerns of Teen Pregnancy

Teenage pregnancy leas to psychological stress due to guilt and shame. When teenagers experience pregnancy, they tend to develop a feeling of being failures. The sense of guilt and shame develops amongst them as they relate with other age mates. Hence, the feeling developed in them leads to psychological stress (Vin et al., 2014).

Pregnant teenagers face parental discrimination. Pregnant teenagers seem to have ashamed their parents’ efforts to raise them; hence, some parents cut off their parental assistance or support. The teenagers then suffer a lack of support from the family feeling discriminated not only by family but the entire society (Vin et al., 2014). Discrimination forms a significant psychological issue that affects their mind and relations.

Teenage pregnancy leads to an impoverished life-style. Due to frustrations and potential denial that teenagers with pregnancy may face, there is a high likelihood of changing their lifestyle. The life adopted is likely to encompass more of negativity than positivity since solitude, depression among other aspects are likely to be faced by the victim.
