Various goals need to be achieved to be successful as a nurse and to succeed in multiple roles that the profession demands one to play. Significantly, being a nursing educator needs one to be conversant with the needs within society and the knowledge of the field ( Oermann & Gaberson, 2016 ). Teaching other nursing has been one of my most significant roles in the profession. Hence, there is a need to ensure that I plan for the next ten years in the job to ensure that I can develop knowledge. Significantly, there are various short term and long term goals to achieve.

First-Year

Essentially, there is a need to ensure that I improve my knowledge in this field. Therefore, the short term goal for the first year is to complete my master's degree in nursing education. This goal is achievable being in my last year of the two years course. Significantly, there is a need to ensure that I have enough money for my school fee. Since I'm already working as a nurse educator, I will be able to cater for the completion. On the other hand, I will need to engage in various studies, especially in multiple institutions such as hospitals, to be able to perform better and gain knowledge. Achieving this short term goal is essential as I will be at a better place as an educator.

Also, there is a need to take a certification exam for an educator and attend a nursing conference, such as the global nursing conference in January 2020. Essentially, the input required is commitment and a onetime fee for the certification exam. Additionally, attending this conference will enable me to understand the various problems nurses face in the profession in different parts of the world. Arguably, this certification is essential as I will be able to work in any nurse education institution as an educator in my entire career. Therefore, this goal is long term as I will be able to achieve more in my profession with the help of the certification, which is critical for nursing educators.

First Five Years

Significantly, the goal of acquiring knowledge in the field of nursing to be a practitioner, which I plan to achieve by 2025. In essence, to be a practitioner, one needs to be a registered nurse. Additionally, one has to acquire knowledge of the interpretation of diagnostic and laboratory tests. There is a necessity to be able to assess the needs of the patient and coordinate care. These experiences will be gained through engagement with various practicing professionals during my completion of the master's course and involvement in the field of nursing, for instance, in hospitals under supervision. Being a practitioner will help to further my knowledge as an educator, especially concerning various illnesses and how to coordinate care for patients.

On the other hand, having a full time teaching position at the University of Pennsylvania is a goal I plan to achieve by 2025. Essentially, this university is closer to me being a resident of Pennsylvania and currently being a master's student and part-time trainer in the university. Therefore, this goal is achievable since I will have completed my master's in nursing education. To achieve this long term goal, one will need to involve myself more in researches on various illnesses affecting various communities and also gain experience as a practicing nurse ( Oermann & Gaberson, 2016 ).

Ten-Year Plan

Significantly, becoming a leader in any profession is a great achievement. There is a need to stay current through continued application of knowledge and studies on new diseases as well as new interventions. These interventions and surveys will be around traditional and modern methods of treatment and care. The long term goal, in this case, is to get a doctor of nursing practice. This program is a doctorate in nursing, which is meant to build on my master's in nursing education ( Mackey & Bassendowski, 2017 ). Additionally, achieving this goal will provide more knowledge of evidence-based practice and systems leadership. Therefore, I plan to apply for this degree at Pennsylvania University as it will be more comfortable while teaching in the same institution.

Also, I plan to become an NCSBN expert exam writer and have a teaching position. This position as an exam writer for the national council requires one to have an active registered nurse license and a master's degree in nursing. Hence, since I plan to complete my master's program in 2020 and a subsequent doctorate in nursing practice, I will be in a better place to pass as an exam writer by 2030. Additionally, my experience as an educator at Pennsylvania nursing university will contribute to my ability to execute my tenured teaching role and writing exam for the national council.

Scholarship and Service

Essentially, the advancement of knowledge is dependent on the culture of institutions and the standards which are set by discipline such as nursing. As a nurse educator, one needs to engage in studies in both traditional and new practices ( Mtawa et al., 2016 ). Significantly, service ensures that one gains experience in the field of a nurse, which enhances educating skills in nursing education. Boyer's model is crucial in explaining the four types of scholarship to explain the importance of research. One of the categories is the scholarship of discovery, which is significant in advancing knowledge in a field such as nursing. Learning of integration, on the other hand, involves bringing together information across time and on various topics ( Mtawa et al., 2016 ). This scholarship helps nurses, for instance, to learn skills such as communication in connection to nursing. Additionally, it helps to learn multiple changes in nursing practice over time.

The other type is the scholarship of application, which involves the use of expertise outside the faculty, which must have results. Scholarship of teaching and learning is essential in nursing education as it ensures the advancement of learning through the evaluation of the students of nursing. Significantly, through reflective practice, knowledge in nursing becomes applicable ( Mtawa et al., 2016 ). Hence, scholarship and service are essential aspects for nursing educators as they can improve traditional knowledge. Additionally, there is an emphasis on expertise through continuous assessment and practical experience through service.

Conclusion

Nursing education is a crucial part of the nursing field as it advances learning. In essence, to achieve the ultimate goal of being a tenured educator and acquire a doctor of nursing practice, I need to plan for the next ten years. This journey underlies the importance of scholarship and service, especially to me as a nursing educator.
