El Nino occurs when trade winds blowing from east to west in the Pacific become weak, making temperatures in the sea surface in central and east tropical Pacific to rise. The warm water in Indonesia sloshes back to easterly direction as it is pulled back by gravity and thermocline starts sinking. Cold water starts rising from deep oceans of South America and water in Peru warms up. Temperatures of sea surface waters continue rising weakening trade winds. Rainfall starts falling following the warm pool of water traveling in the east direction. This makes El Nino to be associated with causing drier weather regions in Australia and Indonesia.

According to Taub (2016), researchers have acquired hair samples from people in the 19 communities of Portugal, and they have found a high amount of mercury poisoning in people’s body system. This indicates that the high death rates in many regions where there is mining taking place are caused by mercury poisoning.
Mercury used by miners, especially in the extraction of gold can be washed to water sources like rivers, and this pollutes the water ecosystems. People ingest the mercury from the water, and high consumption of mercury is not digested, and it passes to the body systems. Mercury can be ingested indirectly by people since anaerobic microorganisms can convert it to organic compounds which are consumed by fish and are moved to people upon eating the fish. Mercury poisoning affects the central nervous system and also the heart, lungs, and kidneys. Moreover, in small quantities it cause impairment of speech, minimized coordination, and muscle weakness in people. It also causes high deaths rates in a region; thus, illegal mining should be curbed and strict actions taken on the miners.
