This paper recognizes that from the age of sixteen years, an individual has already achieved the required physical development that allows him or her to survive independently in the natural environment of the planet. A sixteen year old is a person that can exhibit full capabilities of being a smart person or otherwise. As such, the age that should be allowed as the minimum in voting in elections should be sixteen years. There are a good number of reasons why the voting age should be sixteen; some of them are discussed in this paper.

A serious point to note is that the fact that a person is considered as a young adult in the society does not imply that his or her voice does not deserve to be heard and respected by other elder members of the community. Then again, a look at the modern societies of the world shows that persons are forced to behave or operate as responsible adults at young ages of an adolescent. The families of today are characterised by situations wherein both parents go to work and leave some responsibility of the home to their adolescent children. This situation establishes a sense of double standards with a negative impact that can be curbed by allowing people to vote at the age of sixteen.

It seems unfair that some people, youths under eighteen and above sixteen years, can do some jobs, get paid and pay taxes to the government but not be allowed to vote for the representatives who make the laws that govern their lives in the mentioned spheres. From another perspective, politicians are likely to represent the interests of young adults in the society if people were allowed to vote at sixteen years of age.
