The impacts of smoking on the respiratory system are well known. However, there have been fewer studies conducted on involuntary smoking and the adverse effects that can arise from them. Being exposed to smoke and asthmatic irritants has resulted in numerous effects on the respiratory system. Although each of these three experiences affects the respiratory system, each has a unique way in which the individual’s system will suffer, resulting in different probable complications. The respiratory system is affected by secondary smoke. Individuals exposed to it are susceptible to developing complications in the lungs. These individuals are also susceptible to having reduced lung function resulting from damaged airways and airway sacs of the lung (Campbell & Winstanley, 2017). Asthmatic irritants also affect the respiratory system. However, the impact of asthmatic irritants on the respiratory system is different from that of secondary smoke. These irritants may impact the system directly by affecting the lining of the airway of the lungs, thus making it hypersensitive, which results in asthma flare-ups (American Lung Association, 2019). Individuals who are exposed to smoke have distinct characteristics and complications. Unlike secondary smoke or asthma irritants, smoke affects the respiratory system by causing the bronchi to inflame (John Hopkins Medicine, 2019). It could also facilitate the growth of abnormal cells to result in lumps and masses and in the worst cases, scenarios, tumors. The respiratory system is affected in a unique manner by smoke, secondary smoke, and asthma irritants. Asthmatic irritants will directly affect the lining of the airways to prevent air from flowing smoothly. Smoke will not only inflame the bronchi of the individual but also cause the growth of lumps in the lungs Secondary smoke is also as lethal as firsthand smoke and will affect the respiratory system by damaging the individual’s airways and airway sacs of the lung.
