Part 1: Photography

The chosen photographs for this assignment were part of the article titled, “France wants tougher punishment for those who attack police.” The article was posted on May 11, 2021. It was about the attacks on police officers that have prevailed in France. It was during a ceremony in honor of Eric Mason, an officer that had been killed the previous week in an apparent drug-related incident. The prime minister led the ceremony and promised to offer his "full support” to security officers and ten million euros to reinforce security at police stations. The Prime Minister said that he would propose new legislation to strengthen punishment for those who attack police officers or resist arrest and faster prosecution. The photographs were taken by Daniel Cole. He is a photographer for the Associated Press News. He is based in Marseille and covers the south of France.

Daniel’s photographs helped to build the story. In three of the photos, we see civilians and police officers in attendance at the ceremony. These photos speak a lot about the relationship between police officers and civilians in France. It shows that civilians support police officers. That they feel the pain of the police officers and are ready to stand with them. In the other three photos, we see police officers consoling each other and paying homage to their slain colleague at a police station in Avignon. These photos show the care that police officers have for each other and their adorable friendships. A photograph of civilians carrying banners about the security of officers would have improved the development of the story. It would have provided the words that are on the minds of many people.

Part 2: Video

The story in the video, whose link is provided above, is about an NYPD officer who rushed to help an injured four-year-old girl. After a dispute between “two to four” people, the shooting broke out and left three bystanders injured, a four-old, a twenty-three-year-old, and a forty-three-year-old. Two victims were shot in the leg while the third one was shot in the foot. They had no relation to each other or to the shooting itself. The incident took place at Times Square in New York just before 5 p.m. The incident has been associated with the plummeting crime rate in Times Square, and the police have a "person of interest" that they seek information from.

In the video, a male police officer is seen talking about the girl while pointing in her direction. The NYPD officer, Alysa Vogel, is then heard repeating what the male officer had said and moved towards the girl. Alysa, carrying the child, heads for the ambulance and is helped to open the ambulance's doors by another male officer. This story has touched the hearts of many. Alysa Vogel is admired by many for her courageous and caring attitude. The video is not clear enough. Neither the face of Alysa nor that of the four-year-old girl is captured in the video. Instead of reading about it, we should have seen it in the video. We should have how Alysa held the child and ran with her in her arms towards the ambulance. We should have also seen how the child reacted and probably how the mother reacted too. These details would have added emotion to the story.
