This assignment is based on a conversation between a class teacher and a parent. The parent complains to the teacher that her child has developed some tranquil behavior lately, and she thinks the issue is with the school. The conversation takes place in the classroom just after the students have been released for their games time. The teacher is surprised as she has interacted with the pupil but feels the issue is from home.

Question 1

a) Verbal communication refers to the use of words as a medium to share information between individuals. Writing is considered a form of verbal communication. Verbal behaviors refer to the analysis of the application of verbal communication. One of the noticeable verbal behavior in the conversation is tact. The teacher is surprised at seeing the parent and says, “Mary’s mother, right?” while the parent gives the answers and vice versa. Another verbal behavior conspicuous in the conversation is mand. The teacher says, “Take a seat.” And the parent seats. The conversation is also intraverbal as the parent asks the teacher, “How is my daughter performing?”

b) Non-verbal communication includes transmitting messages in a conversation via non-verbal cues such as facial expression, posture, gestures and body language. One of the non-verbal communication examples noted in the conversation was the nod of heads to indicate agreement. The parent also made facial expressions that showed surprise from some comments made by the teacher.

Question 2

The conversation started in ambivalent tones expressing disagreement about an issue between the parent and the teacher. Both parties turned into concerned moods as they dived further into the conversation. The conversation generally displayed feelings of concern.

Question 3

The verbal and non-verbal cues used in the conversation were congruent. An example is when the teacher points at the chair and says, “Take a seat.” At the same time, the parent smiles while sitting. The parents face displayed appreciation for the act by the teacher. Sometimes both figures used their hands and fingers to stress points in their conversations.
