Barriers to transcultural communication between health workers may result in decreased work performance. Some obstacles include racism, differing values, and education systems. Such restrictions may result in workplace conflicts among nurses. The main barrier that I am likely to face is differing value systems. Understanding and accommodating each other’s culture will help in minimizing transcultural barriers.

Differing value systems undermine my relationship with other professionals. It may be portrayed in three ways. First, staff nurses may have varying perceptions of staff responsibilities to one another (Munoz & Luckmann, 2004). Generally, cultural values affect what nurses consider necessary between the welfare of a person or a group. The diversity of cultures in the healthcare system results in different attitudes. Second, staff caregivers may exhibit differing perceptions of their roles. Some may not fully understand their part as nurses due to transcultural differences. Third, they may have a conflicting understanding of their degree of control. It may influence the level of effort a nurse places towards their patients.

Various reasons make the differences in value systems the hardest to overcome. One, some cultures teach their children respect and patience from an early stage. Nurses from other cultures may lack these qualities, and it may become hard to instill them in their adult lives. Two, it affects the level of comfort and attention a nurse offers their patients. Three, the western culture may fail to teach on dedication to work; hence most nurses may lack the commitment to perform their duties (Munoz & Luckmann, 2004). It is, therefore, imperative to overcome this obstacle. First, nurses should aim to understand each other’s cultures. Two, staff should adopt new methods of caregiving from their colleagues. Additionally, it is crucial that they become accommodating and respectful of other people’s cultures.

In conclusion, numerous barriers result from transcultural communication. A differing value system is the primary barrier that arises at my workplace. It mainly occurs due to the varying perceptions of work. It is, therefore, important that nurses understood, respected, and accommodated each other’s cultures.
