The United States of America has been practicing democracy for a long time. This type of system has its advantages and disadvantages. This system gives power to the people, unlike in North Korea, where the supreme leader decides what is suitable for the people. The American system hinders the monopoly of power. The drawback of the American democratic system is that the leaders concentrate on being reelected hence making it more political.
The benefit of the American system is that it prevents a power monopoly. It allows a president to serve for only two consecutive terms. Unlike in dictatorship, leaders get elected through the people's vote other than birthright (Quinonez, 2014). Party politics are encouraged, therefore establishing freedom. The freedom provided by this system allows recalling of rogue leaders. In Authoritarian regimes, the people's voice is often not considered (li, 2016). The people have a right to remove an officeholder through impeachment in a democratic system. It puts pressure on the elected leaders to perform their duties the right way. The people are aware that they have the ultimate power over their leaders. Because they are the ones, who elect their leaders, chances of a revolt are minimal. The democracy in America protects the interests of its citizens and treats them equally irrespective of age, race, or gender.

Though the American system is favorable, it has its disadvantages. As elected officials are aware that their terms can end anytime, they concentrate on winning the reelection other than service for its citizens. The elected leader will spend the remaining time of their current term seeking the people's goodwill in the impending elections (Quinonez, 2014). Additionally, democracy focuses on people's equality without considering their strengths and weaknesses. American democracy also proves to be costly due to the regular polls held. In the authoritarian system, the decisions are made faster as the leader does not face opposition, as in the case of democracy (li, 2016). More time gets consumed when formulating laws as the government officials consider the public opinion on the matter. Subsequently, when the winning party wins the election, they concentrate on the interests of the majority with the minority getting undermined.
For democracy to work best, the people have to be aware of the political situation and the powers they hold. The American system may push for wrong policies in favor of the ruling party, hence the people's bear the consequences. The authoritarian regime may equally be disadvantageous as misguided policies established by the leaders may prolong for a long time. The American system is more bearable than the North Korean authoritarian system as the rights, and the freedoms of the people are put into consideration.
