English is one of the most complex and irregular languages. This is the case because the curriculum system uses inappropriate methods to teach mastery of the language. Most educators use the whole language approach in teaching beginners in reading and writing English. Accuracy and fluency in English are achieved through the ability of a learner to identify unknown words rather than having to decode through all texts. Research shows that phonetics is effective in inducting accuracy and fluency while teaching English instead of the whole language approach (Judge, 2016). The approach used in teaching phonetics also comes in two forms: analytical and synthetic approaches. The analytical approach uses contextual teaching, while the synthetic method applies a corded system. According to Judge (2016), the synthetic method is more effective in teaching beginners. For example, the alphabet principle becomes explicit when learners discover it through phonetics.

As opposed to the analytical approach, the synthetic system ensures that learners blend and become more familiar with sound and letter identification. The synthetic approach uses a systematic way of introducing sounds and letters to the learners at an early age. A few consonants and vowels are introduced to the learners depending on their ability to master and identify various phonetics (Konza, 2015). It should be explicit and categorical for learners to master reading and speak the language early. The corded approach of teaching English should be adopted to enable the children to learn how to read before reading to learn as is the case with the current system. Scientific research shows that the synthetic method is more systematic than the analytical approach, which uses contextual learning where various components of phonetics are introduced to the learners randomly. Learning both regular and irregular words should be considered when introducing students to reading and speaking English. The only effective way to do this is to use phonetics in a synthetic approach when teaching in schools.
