With the growth in technology, there is the consistent incorporation of the same in other fields to improve performance. Technological application within health implies enhancing the collection and storage of patient information. The health insurance portability and accountability act (HIPAA) protects the security and privacy of individually identifiable health information. All health care workers have the responsibility of taking all the necessary steps needed to comply with HIPAA privacy and security standard rules and regulations. There are significant differences between the HIPAA Privacy Rule and the HIPAA Security Rule that further affect he workplace.

The main difference between HIPAA privacy rules and HIPAA security rules entails the area of focus. HIPAA privacy rules concentrate on the individual having the rights and abilities to control their protected health information. The information allows individuals to acquire treatment and pay their medication bills while being certain that it (the information) will be safeguarded from unauthorized disclosure. The privacy rule further covers the physical security and confidentiality of protected health information in all formats including paper, electronic, and oral (WVSPO, 2020). HIPAA security rule, on the other hand, only concentrates on the protection of electronic protected health information that is created, received, used or maintained. As such, unlike the privacy rule, its scope is limited. Moreover, while the privacy rule concentrates on the right of the individual to keep information private, the security rule entails mechanisms put in place to enhance security off health information. The security rue is essential because a majority of information today is stored online.

HIPAA privacy and security rules are essential to both the current and future workplace since they improve healthcare delivery. The privacy rule provides patients the right to review, inspect, and receive copies of their health information held by a covered entity. This kind of arrangement promotes transparency between the parties involved. The patients also get treatment while assured of their security, which improves confidence in the various facilities offering care. Mistrust between the health care providers and individual patients is minimized. The security rules also help facilities transition from paper records to electronic recording of health information. Security safeguards include technical measures such as secure passwords to minimize inappropriate access to information ( Brodnik, Rinehart-Thompson, & Reynolds, 2017). Consequently, the rule helps streamline administrative health functions, as well as improve efficiency in the health care industry (HHS.gov, 2013). Thus, HIPPA is essential in the protection of health information and improvement of provision of care.
